The Importance of Brushing Your Hair

Brushing your hair properly is one of the most important elements in the maintenance and rejuvenation of your hair, especially when combined with a scalp massage. It is second only to proper diet and the use of organic, holistic shampoos.

Daily brushing of the hair and scalp is far more cleansing than any commercial, artificial shampoo.

Brushing eliminates waste materials -- deposits of uric acid crystals, catarrh and other acids and impurities that build up and become encrusted on the scalp. Brushing also stimulates the capillaries, increasing blood circulation and the transport of oxygen and nutrients to the hair stem, root and bulb. Most importantly, daily brushing stimulates hormone- and oil- producing glands, which keeps the pores of the hair and scalp open, allowing them to breathe and retain their natural oils.

Hair loss problems can almost always be traced to the sebaceous glands - the natural oil-producing and lubricating system of your hair. If the glands are out of balance, they will either overproduce sebum -- the natural fatty oils that deliver nutrients to the hair -- or under-produce it. When they overproduce sebum, the hair follicles drown in their own oil, which interferes with the nourishment of the roots. The scalp is then weakened and the hair begins to fall out. When the sebaceous glands under-produce sebum, the hair roots and follicles become undernourished, causing the hair to become dry and brittle and eventually fall out.

Oftentimes, the foreign matter from mousses, gels, hair sprays and artificial shampoos and conditioners clog the pores and follicles of the scalp as well. These dangerous chemicals not only interfere with nourishment to the roots; they disrupt natural hair growth by confusing the sebaceous glands, which regulate the fallout and reproductive cycle of the hair. These chemicals are also absorbed into the bloodstream.

Brushing is an excellent preventative for these kinds of problems. Proper brushing and massage, when used in combination with organic, holistic shampoos, helps bring the sebaceous glands into balance by cleansing the scalp and stimulating glands and capillaries, ensuring a nourishing flow of blood to the follicles.

Because of its cleansing effect on hair and scalp, brushing is a form of dry shampooing. When done correctly, it is also an excellent, natural conditioner. While stimulating the sebaceous glands, brushing helps distribute sebum throughout the hair and scalp, making the hair stronger, more resilient and manageable. By coating the hair with sebum, brushing helps prevent the excessive evaporation of moisture, giving your hair more natural sheen, body and texture.

How to Massage Your Scalp

Massage your scalp 1 to 3 times a day using a 100% natural scalp massager. Never use plastic or artificial ones — they scratch the scalp and they are invasive to your hair and scalp. Begin at the nape of the neck, massaging gently but vigorously in a circular manner for 3 to 5 minutes or until you feel the scalp tingling from the flow of blood. (Massage in this way after applying shampoo the second time to your hair, for one minute and three minutes respectively.) While brushing does the external work on the scalp and hair, scalp massaging works internally, stimulating the deeper tissues of the scalp where the sebaceous glands reside. When activated in this manner, the sebaceous glands produce a balanced portion of sebum. Be sure to begin your massage at the nape of the neck, because it contains the largest concentration of sebaceous glands. Massage beyond the hairline further down the nape of the neck to release any lingering tension and stress.

How to Brush Your Hair

Stand erect, then bend over from the waist as far down as you can, allowing the blood to flow into the scalp. This increase in circulation stimulates and nourishes the entire scalp and follicles, activating new hair growth. Firmly grasp the brush by the handle; draw it up from the nape of the neck along the sides and over the crown to the front hairline in a slow, easy motion, all the way to the ends of the hair. Brushing for 3 to 5 minutes stimulates the glands and scalp as well. More importantly, it fills the brush bristles with sebum, which you are now ready to distribute to your scalp and hair.

Stand erect with your brush, which is now laden with sebum. Brush from the front hairline back through the hair, allowing the brush to penetrate to the scalp. Stroking smoothly and gently to avoid scratching the scalp, brush down to the nape, all the way to the ends of your hair. This thoroughly coats your hair with sebum, allowing this " natural elixir" to condition and add body and luster to your hair.

Which Brush to Use

Using the proper brush is as important as properly brushing your hair. A natural-bristle brush is the best one to use. Boar bristles are ideal. They are almost identical to human hair in texture. They are gentle and unintrusive to your hair, and evenly distribute your natural oils while absorbing excess oil and removing foreign matter.

To choose the brush that is ideal for your hair and scalp depends on the thickness of your hair and the sensitivity of your scalp you may need a very soft bristle brush or a hard more course one. You will know the brush that is right for you by the soothing, enlivening effect it has on your scalp.

When to Brush

For the ultimate maintenance and rejuvenation of your hair, it is vitally important to maintain a schedule of regular brushing. For optimum results, brush your hair and scalp three times a day - in the morning, late afternoon and at bedtime. Before you brush, sit quietly for three minutes, breathing slowly and deeply through your nose. Calm your body, especially your shoulders, forehead and scalp, releasing any tension and allowing for the maximum flow of blood and air to these areas.

Make brushing a habit. Set a regular schedule and commit to it. Make brushing part of your daily rising routine. After brushing your teeth, brush your hair. Following work, play, exercise or school, brush it again, then once more before bedtime. Nightly brushing is critical. By coating your hair with additional sebum, you will be conditioning your new growth of hair throughout the night.
